To complete its product lines for the food and human Industries, Chimiphar acquired in 1983, with the group Elf-Aquitaine, patents and knacks for manufacturing heat transfer fluids, marketed under the trademark Clogel. These fluidsare intended for food industries (breweries, dairies, canneries, etc...) or heating engineers who need to solve the problems of heat transfer and delay corrosion, always latent in multimetal installations (central heating, solar panels, pumps heat, etc ...).

Chimiphar also manufactures antifreeze based on monoethyleneglycol, ideally suited for industries using engine blocks cooled by a thermal system (generators, boats, skating, etc ...) under the brand name Chimagel E 96 that is available formulated as concentrated or diluted solutions


Difference between the ethylene glycol and propylene glycol


Glycols, generic name of the derivatives obtained by hydration of ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, have in common to be inert towards metals and to lower the freezing point of water; but their similarity ends there.Indeed the MEG is a product harmful if swallowed with symptoms similar to those of alcohol. Furthermore, it iseye irritant. Heat transfer fluids formulated with MEG are marked with a cross of Saint Andrew.
Heat transfer fluids formulated from MPG are not toxic and therefore are not subject to the labeling requirement.

Clogel 2503


The Clogel 2503, formulated based on nontoxic monopropylene, nonflammable and unexploded, comes inconcentrated or ready-made solution, diluted to 30% and colored yellow or red. (On request, we can customizea specific coloration)
Note that we strongly recommend customers who do not have soft water or purified and are supplied with hard water, industrial or chemically highly charged, to order Clogel pre-diluted. We can provide on request all concentrations.

Poor water quality is generating unwanted deposits and accelerates corrosion and bacterial growth.
We strongly recommend to use Clogel, with a minimum dilution of 30%, to delaying the effective corrosion phenomenon and to lower the freezing point of water at about - 25 °.



Role of Clogel

The Clogel has two main functions:

1 - Lower the freezing point of water depending on its concentration that can almost go up to - 40 ° C.
2 - Delay corrosion always latent in a facility multimetal. Note that the more is diluted the Clogel more its protective effect against corrosion decreases

1 - Lowering the freezing point


For measuring the freezing point depression that varies with the concentration of Clogel, one can use several methods which are all based on the content of the glycol solution. One of the most common is to determine bulk density of the solution or density (this value is almost the same in our latitudes) at a known temperature . Indeed bulk density, or density, varies with temperature..

Density

The density is measured using a hydrometer, usually at 20 ° C. The curve here against allows to determine the weight content of Clogel depending on its concentration:

Freezing point

The variation of the concentration: by weight of Clogel 2503 allows to determine the variation of freezing an aqueous solution. The curve below shows this variation.

The density measurement is random.
Indeed, it varies significantly with the suspended solids contained in the refrigeration circuit.
We recommend to filter the solution prior to measurement.

Refraction

It is possible to use refractometry to measure the concentration of Clogel. This highly accurate method in laboratory, which requires appropriate equipment (refractometer), is much less on a circuit that has worked for several weeks.

2°- Corrosion Control


It is very difficult if not impossible, to prevent corrosion in a facility multimetal. One of the causes inherent to the facilities is the potential difference created between two metals of different potential (eg copper and iron), but other causes may provoke it: badly made welds, introduction of foreign chemical substances (leaks ), dilution watertoo acidic or too hard, consumed inhibitory systems, etc..

Heat transfer fluids retard corrosion, but do not prevent it whatever the inhibitor used. That's why a fluid is formed by a complex formula, with a spectrum of protection as broad as possible. A fluid that is not degraded is a guarantee of longevity of the installation.

Chimiphar recommends regular monitoring of fluids in service. For this, we must regularly monitor the density (see above), the color of the medium, pH, and alkaline reserve. These controls are simple and their results are essential for evaluate the effectiveness of the coolant. The deterioration of these parameters is indeed a sign ofalteration of Clogel and, consequently, a premature wear of the circuit.

We strongly recommend to regularly change the fluids in service as soon as there is a degradation of one of itsphysicochemical parameters.

Color of the fluid


Regardless of the initial color of the coolant, red or black colorations are observed, as a flocculent precipitate, which are valuable indications for studying the evolution of corrosion:

A black precipitate corresponds to iron as ferrous oxide; a rusty coloration corresponds to iron as ferric oxide.

The accumulation of sludge results ultimately a series of drawbacks detrimental to the proper functioning of the refrigeration system (clogging of filters, traffic calming, bacterial developments generating unpleasant odors, etc. ..)

PH Control


This value allows to control the acidity or alkalinity of a solution; in a certain way, it is related to the alkaline reserve.
Its decline is a sure sign of degradation of the fluid (≥ 7: alkaline ≤ 7: acid)
It is measured using a pH meter equipped with a glass electrode.
One can also use pH paper, not very accurate but that gives a good approximation.

Control of the alkaline reserve


This value is very important to measure the effectiveness of the fluid to retard corrosion of the system with whichit is in contact.

It is measured using a hydrochloric acid solution N/10 and is expressed in absolute terms.


The value found should not be less than the commercial specification of the used Clogel .
NF 78 104 outlines the terms of this measure.

Note that the temperature changes the kinematic viscosity in centistokes (cSt) of Clogel 2503: as the temperature increases more the product is fluid, however, the more the temperature decreases more the viscosity increases.

Laboratory equipment

Chimiphar sells laboratory equipment, adapted to control heat transfer fluids (densimeters, pH meters, refractometers, various reactants)

Commercial products

Chimiphar produces and distributes Clogel 2503 that it distributes in its pure form or diluted form. (We strongly recommend not to use a fluid diluted to less than 30%)

Effluent recovery

Discharges are becoming more regulated, Chimiphar uses the waste heat transfer fluids solutions and deliversto its customers an official certificate of destruction. It provides optionally the packaging and transportation ofwaste solutions. A certificate of destruction is issued to each withdrawal.

Guarantee

Chimiphar agrees on the compliance of commercial specifications of the products delivered. In any case, it can be worn responsible for facilities malfunctions or misuse of products, including a dilution with hard water.
